Hello everyone,
I use Google Translate to browse websites and write posts. I apologize if I misunderstand posts I'm or if I'm writing nonsense.
I have discovered RPG Maker when I was 12 (in 2000) when a friend of mine had downloaded it. We played around with it and I really really loved it. I actually wish I had never found that engine because since then, every experience with every other game engine has been a disappointment. My standards were too high. I couldn't believe why everything was so complex on the other software.
RPG Maker took my small dream of making games one day and elevated it to a realistic project. It became a passion, almost an obsession. Working with events helped me get into programming. All the concepts of general programming already exist in RPG Maker 2000: Instructions, Variables, Boolean logic, Conditions, Loops and even Pointers! It is not uncommon for some advanced features to start using variable IDs inside other variables, and that concept really gave me an advantage when I had to learn about pointers in C.
When RPG Maker XP came out, I started learning Ruby but at the time, online translators weren't that good and I very quickly gave up. I continued my way in programming until I graduated from high school. I took a different route for my studies (back then, my parents didn't think being a programmer was a good future) but I kept learning things and programming useless projects. When I was introduced to the concept of hackathons in 2012, I immediately got hooked and started doing as many as I could. For one hackathon in 2013, I was planning to make a game and I spent 80% of the hackathon time trying to patch some things with Phaser 2D without much success, then I thought: ok nevermind the coding, let's just get RPG Maker and make something quick for the demo. Which I did, and got the first prize!
Later when I heard about the upcoming release of Maker MV, I was extremely excited to buy it. Then MZ came out soon after so I got it too. At this point, I was not really looking at the engine's code or plugin specifications, I was just happily leveraging the "Script" command.
The it was until very recently that I decided to really dive into it. I made a quick and dirty plugin to allow users to connect a MMMM wallet for authentication into the game and got another small hackathon prize for it. From there, I started really Going through the code. Last summer, in such impulse, I found myself rewriting the whole core engine to Typescript. It's not functional but it serves as a great documentation for whenever I need to build plugins.
Now I am just re-discovering the joys of being in a community through the English version of the forum (rpgmakerweb.com) and I was curious to see what was happening over in the Japanese side.
Sorry for the long post! I'm all out of potatoes.
